Killing the copy cat !

So here I am again ... attempting to squeeze in an uninterrupted hour of uni work into my chaotic life... so far unsuccessful... but here I go again ...

Week five already ... It's crazy how time flies... it only feels like yesterday I was watching Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs for the fiftieth time on VCR. I watched it sooo many times that there ended up being fuzzy grey lines imprinted across the screen. It wasn't until years later that I realised that my favourite animated film was an appropriation of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale. I can pretty much re sight Walt Disneys version word for word but I would not have a clue of the original. This made me question what else in my life was not original that I have believed for so long has been. The first thing that came to mind was the music industry nearly every band are doing covers of famous songs these days. My favourite one is this cover by Mr Little Jeans of the Arcade Fire song Suburbs! Lessig mentions in the reading that it is the creativity that we should remember and celebrate - I agree !! This song by Mr Little Jeans is amazing - the way they have altered an already really good song to (in my opinion) make it better blows me away!

The debate over copyrights and patents is ongoing, and I can understand why. Inventors and creators have a right to protect the fruits of their labours as Boldrin & Levine say! The amount of work that goes into producing a completely original item deserves to stay original. However on the other hand in the example of James Watt and his patent of the steam engine, he was able to hinder advancement of engine technology for about 16 years. Evidently, the system does have its downfalls. I believe that this debate will ever be resolved...

Please leave a comment! Thanks Lydia :)
